We love mentoring!

Plata Schott Attorneys & Counselors at Law is dedicated to the ethical growth and development of law students and new practitioners’ legal practice. For that reason, the Firm created a Legal Intern and Volunteer Attorney Program.

Experience

We practice many areas of law, and are committed to pro bono legal service in the North Florida area. Participants will be assigned to one of the two partners and will work on cases that the attorney is currently handling. Participants can expect to gain experience in the area of Criminal Defense, Juvenile Defense, and Personal Injury depending upon the current caseload.

Participants are expected to work not less than 10 and not more than 20 hours each week for the majority of the Internship. Participants may request reasonable time off during the Internship.

Participants my accompany any attorney to court, and will be given opportunities to observe other legal proceedings. A team meeting and educational session will be held once each week at a time to be determined by the supervising attorney. When the opportunity arises, the Firm may provide Participants with Continuing Legal Education opportunities.

Expectation

The Firm expects professionalism at all times. Participants are expected to dress for court, and have a well-kempt appearance. The Firm also expects Participants to present the same image on social media that they would in the work place.

The Firm expects respect for the Firm, the workplace, client, potential clients, the court, and other attorneys.

The Firm expects that Participants will keep information confidential. Volunteer attorneys may be invited to take part in attorney-client conversations, and therefore are bound by the Rules of Professional Conduct. All Participants will have access to case files and are expected to maintain all information confidential. All Participants must sign a Confidentiality Agreement.

The Firm reserves the right to release any Participant who does not meet expectations.

Benefit

The Firm will assist Participants with learning the law and procedure for various areas of practice, and introduce Participants to many other practitioners in the North Florida legal community. The Firm will serve as advisors for Participants and mentors. The Firm will also teach Participants about the challenges of owning and operating a law firm. The Participant will develop a personal relationship with the Firm and its partners. Additionally, all projects are reviewed with a Firm partner.

For Law Schools

The Firm is willing to work with law schools who offer “bridge the gap” programs. Our firm carries a substantial pro bono case load, and we are able to accommodate students who may only work on pro bono cases. If you would like to know more, contact Shannon Schott at Shannon@plataschott.com.
