Understanding the Compensation Process
When you’re injured through no fault of your own, you may be entitled to compensation. The best way to determine what rights you have is to consult with an attorney. Many people don’t ever take advantage of the free consultation that most attorneys offer because they don’t want to “sue” anybody.
When you first hire an attorney, aren’t suing anyone…yet. Your attorney will drive the car, but you map out the course. Your attorney should always obtain your permission prior to a lawsuit. However, pre-litigation (negotiating a deal without a lawsuit) can accomplish a lot for you. If you’re treating your injuries, the attorney will gather your medical records to illustrate your injury, and the long-term effects of the injuries for the at-fault party’s insurance company to establish your damages. The attorney then conveys that information to the at-fault party’s insurance companies and makes the argument for settling your case for as much compensation as is available to you.
There is no way to guarantee an outcome, but without an attorney who knows how to make your case and work hard toward the settlement, you may lose thousands (and in some cases millions) of dollars of compensation.
